Foresight Group (Foresight), the leading UK venture and growth capital investor, held a Defence and Homeland Security seminar on Monday 17th March at the Royal Society of Arts in London. The forum attracted a panel of experts from the defence industry including Aigis Blast Protection, Trilogy Communications, Vector Command and Nanotecture, all of which Foresight invests in through its VCTs.
The seminar provided an opportunity for companies from the sector to network and share information on sales models, marketing and pricing, and to discuss the outlook for mergers and acquisitions. Robin Southwell, the Chief Executive of EADS UK, one of the world’s largest defence firms, gave a keynote speech in which he noted spend in the homeland security sector is growing at a much more rapid rate than the relatively flat defence sector, with investment being driven by preparation for the London Olympics in 2012.
Bernard Fairman, a Managing Partner at Foresight Group, said:
“The Defence and Homeland Security Forum brought together a prominent group of companies to share views on the key issues affecting the industry. “It is clear that the Government is becoming increasingly concerned about national security and is directing budgets towards the homeland security and defence market. The defence sector will pay a premium for service, but for companies to win business they need to prove they can produce high-quality, integrated solutions.”
Mike Knight, Chief Executive of Trilogy Communications, added:
“The Defence and Homeland Security seminar was an extremely useful opportunity to compare notes with other Foresight portfolio companies and also, get a first-hand insight from large defence primes in terms of what they look for in companies like ours.” Jim Shaw, of Target Corporate Finance, noted: “It was a pleasure to meet such a number of innovative businesses and we hope that we were able to give some insight into M&A in the sector. The defense sector remains an exiting place to do business and we look forward seeing its further development in the coming years. Thank you to Foresight Group for organising such a valuable opportunity for all involved.”
