Full production of Ecosheet set to revolutionise use of recycled material in construction

2k Manufacturing, the Luton based company that has pioneered the revolutionary environmentally-friendly EcoSheet in which Foresight Group is an investor, has commenced full production after successful trials with many of the UK’s leading construction companies. The first orders amounting to over 8,000 sheets have been placed.

EcoSheet is a ground-breaking plywood replacement board made entirely from unwanted waste plastic.  It has been successfully trialled by the UK's biggest construction companies including Bovis Lend Lease, Apollo Group, ISG Pearce, Morgan Sindall and Wates, who all recognise its sustainable qualities. These trials have resulted in EcoSheet being specified as the product of choice in a number of National Framework Agreements with these construction companies. In addition, EcoSheet offers significant commercial and environmental benefits over plywood.

The new factory, which is the first of a nationwide network, will be of major benefit to the construction industry, which currently landfills millions of sheets of plywood a year.  EcoSheet costs about the same as plywood and, like plywood, can be used to build a variety of things but will have an immediate application on sites as hoarding.

It has a number of advantages over plywood, however. It is easier to work with because it does not produce injurious splinters. It does not rot. Unlike plywood, which usually ends up in landfill because it contains adhesives and preservatives and is often painted, EcoSheet can be recycled into more EcoSheet—even if it is painted.

Omer Kutluoglu, Managing Director of 2K Manufacturing explains:  “We are delighted to be at full production further to a wide range of trials. EcoSheet will have a big positive impact on the construction industry and has been proven to outperform imported plywood not just environmentally, but commercially and operationally too.  It’s the obvious solution for anyone looking to reduce construction waste to landfill and back sustainable product design.”
2K has secured equity funding from Foresight Group, a leading investor in green investments, and debt financing from KBC Bank.

2K Manufacturing and EcoSheet will be at EcoBuild (1-3 March, 2011 at ExCeL, London) on stand N1111.

About EcoSheet
EcoSheet is a recycled product which is set to revolutionalise the construction and sign industries.  EcoSheet is the world’s first recycled plastic plywood substitute made entirely from recycled waste mixed plastics that is 100% recyclable at end of life.

Using a unique technological process low grade mixed waste plastic – consumer, industrial and construction waste - is turned into a robust and versatile plastic board for many different purposes that can be used again and again, creating a complete closed loop system.

EcoSheet is being used by the construction industry initially because of the environmental impact relating to plywood.  Over 25 million plywood sheets are used annually which are not recyclable and have to be landfilled.  EcoSheet has been trialed as a sustainable alternative by a number of high profile construction companies. It outperforms imported plywood commercially, operationally and environmentally.

The Luton factory will reprocess 30,000 tonnes of low grade waste plastic, which would otherwise go to landfill or be incinerated, in its first year of operation.  And there are plans to open many more production sites located near consumer waste streams in the UK which will enable the production of up to four million pieces of EcoSheet each year.

EcoSheet offers the following benefits to users:

• Flat with no face defect issues
• Impervious to rain and humidity and can  be stored outdoors
• No painting needed to protect it, but it can be painted
• Available in corporate colours
• Both sides are "A" faces
• Can be jet-washed between uses
• High fixing strength - it can be nailed with 50mm round wire nails, screwed and glued
• Standard sizes: 2440 x 1220
• Generally lighter than plywood
• Cut edges do not need to be resealed
• Cuts with standard tools, yet without splinters or breakout
• Face repairs are easy and effective
• Cost is similar to plywood
• At end-of-life boards can be returned to 2K Manufacturing for recycling, thereby avoiding disposal cost
