Enterprise Investment Schemes

The Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) was introduced by the UK Government to encourage private individuals through tax incentives to invest equity risk capital in private companies and thereby promote economic growth and job creation.

Qualifying investors can claim to offset 30% (20% prior to 6th April 2011) of their investment in a qualifying EIS company against their income tax liabilities. They may also defer capital gains against the amount invested. Capital gains arising on disposal of EIS shares are exempt from capital gains tax and EIS shares fall outside an individual's estate for inheritance tax purposes if held for greater than two years. Losses on EIS shares can be offset against income or capital gains tax liabilities. These advantages are dependent on the investor holding an investment for at least three years.

Foresight Sustainable UK Investment Fund raised £22.5 million in December 2007 and is one of the largest EIS funds, investing in environmental infrastructure in the UK (e.g. recycling and renewable energy). This fund is now fully invested in a portfolio of twelve investments. Foresight Solar EIS was launched in March 2011 to raise up to £20 million to invest in: operating solar ground-mounted plants; ground-mounted plants under construction; and residential and commercial roof-top solar installations.

Stable, long-term sustainable income is generated from the underlying solar projects together with potential for capital appreciation on ultimate realisation.
