Case Study: O-Gen

Ogen is a UK market leader in waste Biomass to energy. The Company operate and are constructing a network of small scale power stations throughout the UK with current sites in Stoke, Derby and Plymouth and a series of planning permissions for further expansion. These facilities have been established both directly and through partnerships with other companies to leverage a greater financial resource and give local and to become embedded in these local markets.

The company utilise the low grade waste wood which has a restricted number of uses and remains a problem waste with several million tonnes per annum still landfilled and now also being exported as a fuel for European waste to energy facilities. Ogen provides an attractive solution, providing energy into the local community by using this locally generated waste resource, typically producing enough electricity for 3000 homes, fuelled by 100 tonnes of waste wood per day.

Foresight have provided the majority of the equity funding to support the development of the Company initially, but more recently this has been supported by a major partnership with MITIE plc, a Facilities management company, in a venture to develop up to 5 plants in the South-West region, the first of which is under construction in Plymouth and is planned to operate at a high efficiency as a combined heat and power plant exporting heat and electricity to local industries.
