Foresight's infrastructure team was one of the first institutional investors in the solar sector where we have been investing since 2008. In the UK, the infrastructure team has now broadened its activities to include not only solar investments but also other infrastructure, such as acquiring contracts under the Private Finance Initiative and energy efficiency projects. During 2011 Foresight launched the Foresight Infrastructure VCT funds seeking to raise £30m from private investors.
The multinational team, with its deep knowledge of the relevant solar energy markets and regulatory environments, operates from offices in Rome, Madrid and Sevenoaks, investing in a variety of solar projects within Italy, Spain and the UK. The team has developed a sector specific network of advisors, lending banks and key strategic partners. These relationships generate an international pipeline of development opportunities and purchase of operating plants.
Foresight's solar infrastructure funds, including accounts managed on behalf of institutions and family offices, invest in: operating solar ground-mounted plants; ground-mounted plants under construction; and residential and commercial roof-top solar installations. Project sizes range from £5 million to £50 million which are typically financed with equity from Foresight and project finance facilities from banks, reflecting the low risk nature of the operating plants and local government subsidies.
In Italy and Spain, the infrastructure team is currently seeking to broaden its activities into other infrastructure projects such as biomass to energy.
Such infrastructure investments offer the potential for long term, stable sustainable income and the potential for capital appreciation on ultimate realisation.
